Garlic Braiding

I have been wanting to grow, harvest, and hang a garlic braid in my kitchen ever since I read Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegatable, Miracle.  We finally grew and harvested a decent garlic crop (over-wintered) and now we have braided it too!

Garlic braiding is not hard, but does require some patience and basic instruction.

For instructions on how to braid garlic, visit this link.

It looks so nice hanging up next to my kitchen window over the sink I hate to use it! Oh but don't worry, it WILL get plucked and used, head by head, as our family loves lots of garlic in our food. I love roasting garlic and combining it with salt, butter, and some herbs to make a wonderful spread for fresh bread. Yum!

  1. Good job! I haven't grown garlic before. Can't you plant it in the fall to be ready in the spring? Do you plant the bulbs? I should try it 'cause I wanna braid some too! :)

    1. Missy, yes, you will want to plant garlic in the fall to be harvested in the spring. We harvested ours a lot later than we expected to, because it wasn't ready yet. You plant a single small garlic clove in the ground and then those turn into big bulbs. I hope you try it! It was pretty easy to grow and over-wintered well because our winter was so mild.

    3. Missy- yes you can actually use garlic from the store, just divide the cloves and plant them like you would a seed!

  2. Your garlic braids look gorgeous. I also have wanted to grow and braid my own garlic for ages! I am planning on planting it for the first time this fall. Hopefully my harvest will look even remotely as lovely as yours next year. :)

  3. Thanks for the tutorial link. I've always just clumped all my garlic together and hung it in the garage. This would make for a more eye pleasing display though! :)

  5. Thanks for the tutorial! We usually keep our garlic in a bin, but I'll have to try braiding it next year. It's such a pretty way to display the bulbs. :)
